Fortifying your Foundation: Jehovah Shalom, The Great Peacemaker

Fortifying Your Foundation…Jehovah Shalom, The Great Peace Maker

Judges 6                                                                                                   Pastor Todd Harker

May 5, 2019

Scripture Emphasis:

Ps 29:11 “The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace.”

The story of Gideon is unique for several reasons.  First, few OT characters interacted with a Preincarnate Jesus more than he did.  It also gives us a look at the depression surrounding the period of the Judges.  Lastly, it gives us today a penetrating look into the human condition apart from and struggling with God’s calling.  To study Gideon is to study human nature.  It is an open, honest and sometimes brutal encounter with basic human response.  Against these truths God reveals His special name Jehovah Shalom.  May we understand what the Great Peacemaker wants us to know.

  1. Gideon lived during _______________________ times – v.1-10
  • Sin will always bring ________________
  • The Midianites always brought _______________
  • God had removed His ______________ – Ps. 66:16-20
  • Lesson:
  • There is nothing more depressing, discouraging and troubling than when we _________________ sin above God
  1. Gideon demonstrated honest human ____________ – v.11-16
  • He shows great ___________ because of circumstances – v.11
  • He displays great __________________ before the Lord – v.12
  • He expresses great _____________ about his abilities – v.15
  • The ANATOMY of Fear:
  • When our circumstances seem ______________________
  • When our abilities seem ___________________
  • When our God seems ___________________

Isaiah 40                                                                                                                       Pastor Todd Harker

April 28, 2019

Scripture Emphasis:

Isa 40:28 “Do you not know? Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.”

Sometimes we bring difficult situations upon ourselves like Judah did.  Other times God allows us to go through disturbing times for seemingly no reason other than to accomplish His purpose in our lives.  In both situations, God does not leave us there alone.  To those who love and follow Him He gives comfort in various ways.

  1. God comforts with His _________________ – v.1-5

  1. God comforts with His _____________ – v.6-8

  1. God comforts with His _______________ – v.9-11

  1. God comforts with His ________________ – v.12-17

  1. God comforts with His ____________________ – v.18-20

  1. God comforts with His __________________ – v.21-26

  1. God comforts with His ____________ – v.27-28

  1. God comforts with His __________________ – v.29

  1. God comforts with His __________________ – v.30-31

Fortifying Your Foundation…Advocate, The Great Attorney

Selected Passages                                                                                     Pastor Todd Harker

Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019

Scripture Emphasis:

1 John 2:1 “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”

In my humble opinion there are three great days in the history of the World.  The third greatest day is the day Jesus was born.  The second was the day Jesus died.  The greatest day is the day we celebrate this morning – the day Christ arose.  His resurrection makes it possible for Jesus to be our Advocate.  Believe me, we need Him to be just that.

  1. As our Advocate, Jesus possesses __________________ qualifications
  • He endured unthinkable ______________ – Luke 22:53-55
  • He suffered the brutality of the _________________ – Luke 23:26-49
  • He experienced an awkward ______________ – Luke 23:50-56
  • He participated in a glorious ____________________ – Luke 24:1-12
  • He celebrated in a spectacular __________________ – Luke 24:50-53

  1. As our Advocate, Jesus has ______________ success
  • Our Advocate is always ________ His game – 1 John 2:1
  • Our Advocate is always _____________ for business– Psalm 121:3, 4

  • He does not maintain His client’s ___________________

Deuteronomy 10:12-22                                                                                             Pastor Todd Harker

March 31, 2019

Scripture Emphasis:

Deut 10:17 “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.”

The nation had already failed God when they quarreled and tested Him at Meribah and Massah.  They rejected God on the doorstep of the Promise Land.  It was so bad God could have destroyed them.  Thankfully He did not.  In Deuteronomy this morning we learn of God’s grace given once again to a stiff-necked people.  His words to them can equally be applied for us this morning.

  1. What does the Great God desire?
  2. To fear Him – Not as a brutal ______________ but a loving ____________

  4. To love Him – To ______________ to Him as a father and friend

Fortifying Your Foundation…El Emet (3), The Great Truth

Selected Passages                                                                                    Pastor Todd Harker

March 24, 2019

Scripture Emphasis:

John 14:6 “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Satan’s question, “Did God say,” made the way to Pilate’s question, “What is truth.”  It is ironic because God reveals Himself as El Emet in the Old Testament.  Jesus, in the New Testament, simply states, “I am the Truth.”  The church should know and cling to the truth but at times easily falls prey to lies. Here are six simple truths you can hold firm.

  1. Jesus was truth to those who exaggerated ___________________ – Mt. 6:2-18
  • You are not going _________________ living like this
  1. Jesus was truth to those who were listening _________________ – Mt. 7:24-27
  • You can __________ your lives upon my Word
  1. Jesus was truth to those who were _________________ – Jn 4:23, 24
  • What you are doing is wrong, but I can make you _____________
  1. Jesus was truth to the one who was ________________ – Luke 19
  • There is no one beyond the ___________________ of Jesus
  • I will always ___________ you where you are at
  1. Jesus was truth to those who were _________________ – John 6:26
  • I want you spiritually minded not _________________ motivated
  1. Jesus was truth to one who was righteously ___________ – Luke 23:43
  • There is no one too far lost to be ________________

Ps 31:5 “Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O Lord, the God of truth.”

People have trusted crooked politicians, quack doctors, religious frauds and fake friends.  They have been taken by free vacations, land bargains and amazing home improvement deals. The list of what people have fallen for is almost endless. It is hard to know what is genuinely true and what is “to good to be true”.  Today we meet El Emet.  He is not fake news.  El Emet means the God who is truth.  It does not mean He SPEAKS the truth or that He HAS truth, but that God IS TRUTH!!!

  1. The Truth can be REJECTED – Gen. 2 and 3
  • God had given them EVERYTHING
  • Satan convinced them they needed SOMETHING

1 Samuel 2:3                                                                                            Pastor Todd Harker

February 10, 2019

Scripture Emphasis:

“Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.  1 Samuel 2:3 NIV

El De’Ot defines the knowledge of God. It means He is all-knowing or omniscient. He knows everything actual and possible. God never discovers anything new nor is He surprised by any event. He simply knows all things equally perfect. Often God gets blamed for certain aspects concerning His knowledge. Today we seek to clear up some misconceptions
